Brief History of Household Robots
Robots will play a growing role in our lives.
You see videos of them being shared on social media. You hear about robots doing stuff that no one else can handle. Even cooler, more and more of them are being used in our homes.
A Brief History
When the first robots made the jump from science fiction, they were mostly for industrial use. These machines were used for automating manufacturing in factories.
Then, the 1980s ushered in the first robots that were not only meant for industrial use These robots did nothing more than mimic human movements like walking, waving, and shaking hands. Still, they were quite impressive as they showed a great deal of innovation and promise.
The development of three key technologies played a huge role in the development of robots:
- AI (artificial intelligence)
These three technologies play indispensable in the development of robots in general. The sensors guide the movements of the robots, while the actuators are vital for making them move. AI, on the other hand, is the reason why robots can be made autonomous.
The first robotic vacuum cleaner made an appearance in 1996 by Electrolux. Though innovative for the time, it lacked some of the things we love about modern robot vacuums such as the ability to recognize walls and return to the charging station on its own.
The modern cleaning and vacuum robots now are very efficient and are highly autonomous. They can perform tasks such as mopping and vacuuming with very little intervention from humans.
The history of domestic robots is quite short. What is certain is that the future of these robots is quite promising.
